Cast Iron Tub Refinishing: Steps
1.  Use trisodium phosphate degreasing cleaners to scrub the cast iron tub down. Remove all foreign residues, particles, rust and stains from the tub with steel wool. In large rust spots, you can use sandpaper to scrape it away.
2. Rinse the cast iron thoroughly. Use wet rag plus liquid cleaner to clean the tub from every speck of dirt and rust. In two hours, let it air dry. Make sure when you are doing the next step, the tub is completely dry.
3. Before you do refinishing, fix any holes, scratches, cracks, and nicks. Prepare the fiberglass putty. Hardening agent and putty are come in most of putty kits. Use a trowel to take fiberglass putty and fill it into the problem area. Make sure you apply the putty as flat and close to the tub surface as possible. And then, sand the fixed area.
4. Protect the area that you don’t want to refinish such as faucets, walls, floors and hot and cool water knobs. Use a masking paper and painter’s tape to cover them.
5. To help the finished result look good and help your paint perfectly adhere on the surface of tub, apply a thin layer of the enamel bonding agents with the use of a rag. You should wait about 2 hours until the applied stain is completely dry.
6.¬†Take a paint sprayer and pour an acrylic primer into the reservoir. Keep¬†a distance¬†of ¬†8 ‚Äď inches between the tub and the paint spray when applying a fine coat of acrylic primer. This step has the purpose to create a beautiful finish. You should wait until the primer is completely dry¬†for at least three hours. If you¬†don’t have¬†any paint spray, you can apply the primer with paint brush.
7.  Finish the refinishing of your cast iron tub with painting it. Remember to avoid using a latex paint on your cast iron tub. Acrylic urethane enamel or epoxy paint is really perfect for the right look. You can use a paint brush to apply the thin coats of paint. In 5 hours, once the first coat has dried, apply the second coat of paint. Let it dry perfectly before you use the tub.
